NGO marketing tips from the corporate trenches. Learn tips and strategies that help your organisation stand out, connect with the right people and inspire them to act. Our marketing training for NGOs takes the proven principles used by commercial marketing teams and adapts them to the world of causes, campaigns and supporters, so that you can make the most of limited budgets and achieve real results.

Why marketing training for NGOs matters

The word “marketing” makes some people in the non-profit sector uneasy. It can sound like selling, spin or something only large brands do. In reality, marketing is about understanding people: who they are, what they care about and what would encourage them to support your cause. Every NGO already does marketing, whether it calls it that or not, each time it recruits volunteers, launches an appeal, promotes an event or asks policymakers to listen.

Doing it deliberately makes a significant difference. When your positioning is clear, your audiences are well defined and your campaigns are planned around measurable objectives, every euro and every hour invested in communication works harder. This course gives you the frameworks and practical tools to do exactly that.

What you will learn

By the end of the day, you will be able to:

  • Position your organisation clearly, articulating what makes your work distinctive and why it matters
  • Segment your audiences into meaningful groups and understand the motivations and barriers of each
  • Plan and run campaigns with clear objectives, messages, calls to action and timelines
  • Choose and use digital channels effectively, from your website and email to social media
  • Strengthen your fundraising communications by applying marketing principles to appeals and supporter journeys
  • Measure results and use what you learn to improve future activities

Who this course is for

  • Communication and marketing officers in NGOs, charities and foundations
  • Fundraisers and supporter engagement staff who want to make their appeals more effective
  • Campaigners and programme staff who need to promote activities, events or services
  • Directors and managers of smaller organisations who handle marketing alongside many other responsibilities

No previous marketing training is needed. The course works well both for newcomers and for experienced staff who want to bring more structure to what they already do.

How the day works

Like all our courses, Mastering Marketing is a practical, hands-on, one-day classroom workshop. Short explanations are followed by exercises in small groups, built around realistic NGO scenarios: repositioning a small charity, planning a volunteer recruitment drive, designing a year-end appeal or promoting a policy report to a new audience. You will apply each tool, compare approaches with participants from other organisations and receive practical feedback from the trainer.

Bring a real challenge if you can, such as an upcoming campaign, an audience you struggle to reach or a fundraising appeal you would like to improve. You will leave with concrete ideas and a draft plan. Read more about how we teach on our training approach page.

Corporate marketing principles, adapted to NGOs

Commercial marketers have developed powerful ways of understanding audiences and motivating action. Many of them translate well to the non-profit world, provided they are adapted thoughtfully:

  • From customers to supporters. Instead of buyers, NGOs have donors, volunteers, members, campaigners, partners and policymakers. Each group has different motivations, and segmentation helps you speak to each one appropriately.
  • From products to causes. You are not selling a product, but you are asking people to give time, money or attention. A clear proposition explains why your organisation is the right place for that support.
  • From sales funnels to supporter journeys. The idea of guiding people step by step, from first awareness to long-term commitment, works just as well for supporters as it does for customers.
  • From marketing budgets to smart choices. Most NGOs cannot outspend anyone. Focus, consistency and good use of owned channels such as your website and email list matter far more than big budgets.
  • From profit to purpose. Ethical storytelling, respect for the people you represent and responsible use of supporter data, in line with GDPR, are non-negotiable.

The result is an approach to marketing that feels authentic to your organisation’s values while delivering measurable results.

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites. It is helpful to arrive with a basic overview of your organisation’s audiences, channels and recent campaigns or appeals, so that you can apply the tools directly during the exercises.

Marketing and public relations reinforce each other. If you also deal with journalists, stakeholders or reputation, consider our Mastering Public Relations workshop. If you manage campaigns as projects, our project management courses will help you plan and deliver them on time and on budget.

How to book

The Mastering Marketing workshop costs €450 per participant, excluding VAT. Book your place through our shop; dates are confirmed by email after booking. To train your whole communication or fundraising team, ask about in-house training. For any questions, call us on +32 2 403 49 83 or email [email protected].

Frequently asked questions

Is marketing really relevant for NGOs?

Yes. Every NGO competes for attention, support and funding. Marketing helps you understand your audiences, position your organisation clearly and run campaigns that move people to act.

Does the course cover fundraising?

We cover fundraising communications: how to apply marketing principles to appeals, donor journeys and supporter engagement. It is not a course on grant writing or fundraising regulation.

Do I need a marketing background?

No. The course is designed for NGO staff with or without marketing experience who want a practical, structured approach.

Will we look at digital channels?

Yes. We discuss how to choose and use digital channels such as your website, email and social media, and how to measure their results.

How is this course different from Mastering Public Relations?

Public relations focuses on reputation, stakeholders and media relations. Marketing focuses on positioning, audiences, campaigns and moving supporters to act. The two complement each other.
